Profile

My current body of work represents both a technical distillation of a lifelong art career and a, some-what-reluctant, out-flowing of otherworldly influences. My paintings are a performance of energy. It is a collaborative dance of elemental, universal, and personal creative forces.

I am a medium through which these forces express concepts and emotions. Color is the preeminent tool I use to represent the inexorable mingling between universe and ego. Color invokes pure meaning from our primordial minds clear through to our highest imaginative processes. Color is felt as intensely as our eyes perceive it and our minds decode it.

The very interaction between the viewer and the object viewed is the completion of the narrative, different and unique to each minds' perspective: the painted image is incomplete without the viewer.

In our post-postmodernist world, spinning at cyber-speed, interactions between individuals become a fluid matrix that must not be stagnated by convention, all images, which are contrived to represent, are almost instantly scanned, labeled, and filed in our minds. In order to reach a new perspective through image, the image must evade the minds filing system, if only for a moment, and allow for imagination to affect the object.

“UNIVERSALISM”

“Art that relies on a collaboration of energies in which the artist is like the conductor of a symphony and the colors and symbols are the instruments bent and blown, smashed and distorted, dissolved and reformed into a picture plane that becomes a slice of the universe.”

The work relies on outside energies, and the outside energies rely on the artists’ trust.

The artist creates a space in which the viewer is allowed to view pure energy.

Geometric abstraction of the picture plane is enhanced by hanging the pieces ninety degree off-normal. This, so-called, diamond shape further removes the viewer from limiting paradigms that would lead to labels. The push and pull of the work comes from the abstract quality that is uncomfortable to people who are programmed to receive visual information in a certain way. Unlike previous abstract aesthetic, the work is actually an ideal representation with all the detail and intricacies of the ‘real’ it is just codified in the truest language of pure unconscious mind.

Utopia is what you strive for, not a reality of life. De Stile painting was a substitute to experience harmony. In much the same way, Universalism gives the viewer a glimpse ‘behind the curtain of reality’ and in so doing can have a profound effect on the viewer.”   ~Ted Shaw
